At first glance the call looks simple. And it is if you are
talking about the “goal”.
The goal is to be
a disciples, introduce others to Christ and disciples those who will listen.
This is like the goal in football; get more points than your
opponent. That is simple right?
To achieve this goal in football you have to study your team
and your opponent. Find the right combinations of office and defense, make a
plan and execute that plan. But wait before you even get to the field to
execute that plan you have to prepare. And you have to have someone paying the
bills or you will never get to the field.
You also have expenses while you are
on the field. Someone has to pay for the ticket takers, the ticket makers, the trainers,
the balls, the referees, the uniforms, the goal posts, the …. You get the picture.
And during the game someone has to sustain the players, gatorade, bandages,
bench warmers when it is cold, bench coolers when it is hot.
You have to have
the equipment needed, the shoulder pads, the helmets, the field itself. You have
to have energy bars and sometimes pain medicine. There are a lot of things you
need to play the game. Someone has to pay for all of this. You spend a lot of
time looking for funding so you can play the game. Sometimes this take most of
your time.
The truth is that
it take a lot to achieve the goal in missions. You have to train in language,
culture sensitivity, bible knowledge and spiritual warfare. You must raise the
funds to be equipped, travel, and sustain you on the field. You must build your
team.
The team is more
than those who go with you physically. The team is made up of:
- the grandmother that prays for your every day
- the pastors that cover you
- the friends that encourage you
- the supporters who fund you
- the family that misses you but knows you need to go
- the churches that send teams and come see you
- the interns and staff that come along side of you
- the board members that have your back
- the volunteers that gather and ship what you need
The missionaries
are everyone on the team because you cannot go if you do not have a team behind
you. Your team is more important than you are. Because you cannot go without
your team.
